Butler County High School Math Students Learn Through Discovery

Students in a math class at Butler County High School are putting problem solving at the center of their learning. Instead of starting with the answer, they are learning through discovery: working through the math themselves to figure out how and why it works.

BCHS Principal Stoye Young shared the classroom moment as an example of Problem Solving, one of the five pillars of Butler County Schools' Portrait of a Learner. The district built that framework alongside local families and business leaders to describe what readiness for life looks like in Butler County. Problem Solving centers on durable skills like critical thinking, decision making, and perseverance.

Discovery learning asks students to stay with a problem, test an idea, and try a different approach when the first one doesn't work. Students who practice that kind of thinking in math class carry it with them into a job interview, a broken-down truck, or any situation where the answer isn't handed to them.

Principal Young shared photos of the students at work. They're a reminder that the Portrait of a Learner doesn't only show up at award ceremonies or special events. It shows up on a regular school day, in a regular classroom, when students are trusted to figure things out.
