BCMS Boys Basketball Team Steps Up for a Cleaner Community

Butler County Middle School Boys Basketball players put their teamwork to work off the court, picking up trash around the community and taking responsibility for keeping Butler County clean.

Principal Tim Freeman shared the project as an example of the district's Global Citizenship competency in action, one of the five pillars in Butler County Schools' Portrait of a Learner framework. The players worked together, served their community, and made a visible difference in the place they call home.

Trash pickup isn't glamorous work. It's bending down, filling bags, and doing a job most people drive past without noticing. That's exactly the point of Global Citizenship: it asks students to look past their own routine and take care of something bigger than themselves. The BCMS Boys Basketball team did that without being asked to score a single point for it.

Basketball already teaches these players to depend on each other, to show up, to pull their weight for the team. This project asked them to turn that same mindset toward their community, and they did. A cleaner street or a cleared-out lot doesn't show up in a box score, but it reflects the same character the team builds every time they step on the court.

Butler County Middle School continues to look for ways to connect student leadership to real community impact. The basketball team's trash pickup is a small project with a simple message: Bears take care of Butler County, on the court and off it. We are ONE TEAM with ONE VISION that makes us BUTLER STRONG.
