Percy Jackson Gallery Walk Gets BCMS Sixth Graders Talking After Fall Break

Mrs. Wilson's sixth grade reading students at Butler County Middle School came back from fall break and went straight into a Percy Jackson gallery walk.

Students worked through the activity with their classmates, reviewing key concepts from their reading. Along the way they shared ideas and talked through their thinking out loud. BCMS Principal Tim Freeman shared the lesson as an example of Collaboration, one of the five pillars of Butler County Schools' Portrait of a Learner.

Collaboration in the Portrait of a Learner covers teamwork, positive relationships and being responsible for your part of the group's work. A gallery walk gives sixth graders practice in all of it, since what each student takes away depends partly on what their classmates noticed. The lesson also built Communication, the pillar that covers listening and putting your ideas into words other people can follow.

Families can keep the conversation going at home. Ask your BCMS reader what a classmate noticed about the story that they missed, and see where the conversation goes.
